Pottery Wheel for Kids – 7 Years and Up

Pottery_Wheel_Kids

Come to the Workshop and see what all the fun is about!

You can learn to throw clay on the wheel in this 8 week course and have some really cool pottery to take home. The class will cover wedging, centering, pulling, trimming, use of tools and surface techniques. Basic small to medium vessels will be taught (such as cylinders and small bowls). Students will also learn basic glazing techniques. Each student will work on their own wheel and learn the basics of throwing and shaping clay. If a student has already participated in our pottery wheel class or camp, this class will help them develop  the skills that they have learned and take them to the next level of proficiency.  Students should wear old clothes because work on the potter’s wheel can get messy. Classes are held once weekly for 8 weeks. A missed class can be made up on another class day. Class is limited to 8 students and will be cancelled if enrollment is below 4 students.  So bring your friends!

“If you are looking for a place for your child

to study art in a meaningful way,

a place where they will actually

then The Art Workshop is for you.”*

Take your child’s art education beyond the classroom!  Sketching on location, visiting museums and exploring the world around us and ourselves are a big part of our home school curriculum. Our successful home school art program was started in 1995, when Nancy Kopp, founder of The Art Workshop realized that there was a lack of specific art programming for children who were home schooled. The Art Workshop provides an enriching atmosphere to learn and grow artistically and socially. The feedback that we have received from parents who are educating their children at home, has been very positive through the years, and the students keep returning, which is the best endorsement!

Fundamental art concepts will be introduced using imaginative and fun projects. Art History is woven into lessons to expand the individual’s art knowledge, and encourage art appreciation. All students in our home school program, regardless of age, will be able to experience working with clay, wood, and other sculpture materials. Lessons in drawing, painting and using oil and soft pastels are spread out throughout the year.  A field trip will be scheduled as often as possible to reinforce the curriculum and encourage appreciation for art created by others.

Our goal is to teach the language and concepts of art and to encourage creativity. Students, in the process, develop a confidence in their own artistic ability and discover individuality in self-expression through a visual medium.

All classes are ongoing and can be joined at any time with a prorated fee.  A NEW CLASS MAY BE STARTED ANOTHER DAY AND TIME IF PARENTS GET AT LEAST 6 STUDENTS TOGETHER. (SUBJECT TO CLASSROOM AVAILABILITY.)

[box type=”bio”] June 2013        *  “I had always planned to give my children an art education. Studies show that children who do art learn to think about problems in a different way. Art is a wonderful way to express oneself. We know all these things, yet when it comes to squeezing real art education into our days we fall short. All four of my children have learned the basic vocabulary of art, studied art history, learned many techniques and methods in drawing, painting, printing, clay and sculpture, and just generally learned to create. If you are looking for a place for your child to study art in a meaningful way, a place where he will actually learn about art and art history, then The Art Workshop is for you.”                    – Deb and Scott Liston[/box]
