What makes our camps different?

Well, certified art teachers, small class sizes, super creative subjects in a nutshell.  This is a place for kids to create and explore all aspects of art, try new mediums, and expand their imaginations.  Every week  is some thing new and exciting.  Seriously, the kids don’t want to leave!                                                                                                                                                     Our teachers are certified art education professionals teaching kids how to make their art dreams come true.  Teacher student ratio is 6-1 so your child gets lots of attention. Our popular art camps have been in the Cincinnati area for over 30 years.  Katie and Mindy will be back to teach pottery wheel.  And we will have a new teacher, Megan, who will do all of the other creative camps.                                                                                                                                                           We have the best pottery wheel camp in the city!    Every student (ages 6 and up) gets their own pottery wheel for the week to explore the joy and skill of    throwing. Glazing techniques and some hand building rounds out this introductory camp. To improve skill level, the class can be taken multiple times and proceed to Intensive Wheel at the end of the summer. Or try a new option this summer by taking Pottery Wheel Camp All DAY!                                                     For those parents who are working or on the go, we offer before and after camp care. Before care starts at 8:30 and after care ends at 5:30.                       Morning camps are 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. Afternoon camps are 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm.                                                                                                                                                       If a camper signs up for the whole day there will be a 1 hour supervised lunch period. If more than one camp is purchased, discounts are applied.

Pottery Wheel for Kids – 7 Years and Up

Pottery_Wheel_Kids

Come to the Workshop and see what all the fun is about!

You can learn to throw clay on the wheel in this 8 week course and have some really cool pottery to take home. The class will cover wedging, centering, pulling, trimming, use of tools and surface techniques. Basic small to medium vessels will be taught (such as cylinders and small bowls). Students will also learn basic glazing techniques. Each student will work on their own wheel and learn the basics of throwing and shaping clay. If a student has already participated in our pottery wheel class or camp, this class will help them develop  the skills that they have learned and take them to the next level of proficiency.  Students should wear old clothes because work on the potter’s wheel can get messy. Classes are held once weekly for 8 weeks. A missed class can be made up on another class day. Class is limited to 8 students and will be cancelled if enrollment is below 4 students.  So bring your friends!

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE CLASS

That’s awesome! Did you know that Jackson Pollack really wanted to be an artist but was not very good at drawing? So he created a different way to make art. Action painting or splatter painting is what it’s called.  Kids LOVE learning this stuff!  Understanding the lives (particularly the childhood) of artists is an important part of the appreciation of art and experimenting in art.  Seeing how others used supplies and techniques is just inspiring!  That’s why art history is a big part of our classes.

Class format begins with an artist or art history reference, story or slide show.  Students brainstorm about how to use what we’ve just learned to create their own work of art.  Sometimes a short demo is included.  This takes no more than 10 minutes.  Kids have the rest of the class time to create using clay, wood, wire, paper, watercolor paint, acrylic paint,  or craft materials.

Our goal is to facilitate creativity and teach your child art history and techniques.  In the process they have fun and create awesome things!

Mommy / Daddy and Me – Ages 3 through 6

Mommy_Daddy_Me

Hear stories, create and play with paint, clay, and paper as you and your little artist explore the world of art and have fun together.

Best of all – leave the mess at the Workshop! Learn about color, line and shape and experience various ways to create art with your child. Little artists will gain confidence and improve hand-eye coordination and small motor skills with the bonus of cool projects to take home, not to mention, having this special time with Mom or Dad.  Studies have shown that early involvement in art exploration improves writing skills and cognitive ability once a child enters school.

Fine Art Elective 7th-12th Grade/Portfolio

No time for art in your school schedule? Come to the Workshop and learn to paint, draw realistically and make sculpture or pottery and keep in touch with your creative side. The Art Workshop will help your teen find his/focus in art while exploring other media to help them become a well rounded artist. Art appreciation, art history, and understanding visual expression of self and others will be our focus,  as well as mastering techniques and understanding composition.  This is an individually guided class, so class size is small.  Whatever your student’s interest is, clay, sculpture, painting, or drawing, we will be able to take them to the next level.  Portfolio consultation and development is available for teens considering art school for high school or college.  (Note- We have helped 3 home schooled students get into the art college of their choice on the strength of their portfolios! We also have helped many kids get into SCPA.)

“If you are looking for a place for your child

to study art in a meaningful way,

a place where they will actually

Take your child’s art education beyond the classroom!  Sketching on location, visiting museums and exploring the world around us and ourselves are a big part of our home school curriculum. Our successful home school art program was started in 1995, when Nancy Kopp, founder of The Art Workshop realized that there was a lack of specific art programming for children who were home schooled. The Art Workshop provides an enriching atmosphere to learn and grow artistically and socially. The feedback that we have received from parents who are educating their children at home, has been very positive through the years, and the students keep returning, which is the best endorsement!

Fundamental art concepts will be introduced using imaginative and fun projects. Art History is woven into lessons to expand the individual’s art knowledge, and encourage art appreciation. All students in our home school program, regardless of age, will be able to experience working with clay, wood, and other sculpture materials. Lessons in drawing, painting and using oil and soft pastels are spread out throughout the year.  A field trip will be scheduled as often as possible to reinforce the curriculum and encourage appreciation for art created by others.

Our goal is to teach the language and concepts of art and to encourage creativity. Students, in the process, develop a confidence in their own artistic ability and discover individuality in self-expression through a visual medium.

All classes are ongoing and can be joined at any time with a prorated fee.  A NEW CLASS MAY BE STARTED ANOTHER DAY AND TIME IF PARENTS GET AT LEAST 6 STUDENTS TOGETHER. (SUBJECT TO CLASSROOM AVAILABILITY.)

[box type=”bio”] June 2013        *  “I had always planned to give my children an art education. Studies show that children who do art learn to think about problems in a different way. Art is a wonderful way to express oneself. We know all these things, yet when it comes to squeezing real art education into our days we fall short. All four of my children have learned the basic vocabulary of art, studied art history, learned many techniques and methods in drawing, painting, printing, clay and sculpture, and just generally learned to create. If you are looking for a place for your child to study art in a meaningful way, a place where he will actually learn about art and art history, then The Art Workshop is for you.”                    – Deb and Scott Liston[/box]
